The 20 Incher stonefly is a great pattern for mimicking large stonefly nymphs. If tied smaller it can also mimic baetis as well. Its just got everything that makes trout bite. Biot tails, ribbed peacock body, and active legs that move around like crazy. Just really one of the best stonefly patterns out there in my opinion.

Haree Stone – Mark DeFrank

This is another great pattern for heavy stonefly nymphs. Just vary the colors to suit the species of stonefly you want to imitate. It uses the Hareline wiggle dubbing in a loop so that the material is quite buggy. I like the pattern for it’s simple list of materials, less complex than many stoneflies I’ve seen. Once the body is dubbed, a quick soft hackle completes the fly.

Black Widow- Jason Galloway

This is one fly you don’t want to lose a lot of. With 8 beads on the shank, it’ll take you into some pretty deep and quick waters without the need for splitshot I think. Jason from Chattooga River Fly Shop ties up what I think is the beastliest looking fly I’ve seen in quite some time. Perhaps this is just the shack nasties talking, but I’m busting at the seems now waiting for spring creeks to open and try out this fly. the step by step tutorial is available on Hatches here. Enjoy!
