Green Butt Skunk tied by Darren MacEachern

The Green Butt Skunk is one of the most popular west Coast steelhead flies around and many different versions exist. The fly is a form of the Skunk and is credited to the late Dan Callaghan. Dan passed away in 2006, but his friends Steve Bukieda and Joel La Follette got together and came up with a wonderful idea to honor Dan’s memory and his love of the North Umpqua River. The project collected Green Butt Skunks from 100 tyers and the collection was put together into a giant frame with Dans original Green Butt Skunk as a centerpiece. The framed collection also features GBS’s tied in many different styles from full dressed Atlantic Salmon versions to a humpy themed dry fly version. Link below. 101 Green Butt Skunks

Emerald Shanker by Kevin Hospodar

Kevin’s Emerald Shanker is a perfect little fly to swing through a pool of great lakes steelhead. The black and chartreuse color combination is a personal favorite for fishing tributaries of Lake Ontario. It’s a simple pattern and easy to modify to suit your needs.

Kevin ties this pattern in a few different variations including versions with weighted barbell eyes and an added grizzly hackle in the wing. I can’t wait to swing this one.

Suskwa Poacher tied by Darren MacEachern

The Suskwa Poacher is tied on an articulated shank aka stinger hook or intruder hook. You can find the tutorial for tying the shank at https://youtu.be/928yL1gK1RU and it can be used to tie this fly and many others.

The Suskwa Poacher is a popular and proven Egg Sucking Leech pattern. This dark colored articulated fly is a killer choice for winter steelhead runs and for colored water in warmer seasons. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the spawning steelhead attach leeches on sight because they see them as predators of their vulnerable eggs. The leeches are hit aggressively, bitten, spit out and left for dead.

The fly can be fished on the swing or dead drifted along the bottom. Be sure to use a string wire for the leash and be sure to fold back the tag ends and you’ll have a nice sturdy fly.
