Purple Skunk Variant – Dimitri Gammer

I’ve been loving all the new fly tying video, and for the experienced tyer, it just keeps getting better and better. Instructional video are wonderful for those trying to learn new skills or cut their teeth on some basic patterns, but for tyers well versed in the ways of threads and hook, it can be a bit lame to sit through another how to. We just need to see the steps, perhaps a little on-screen narration and hopefully some new interesting music to accompany. Dustin kinda hits all the buttons for me on this tie, using cuts to reduce the fluff in the flick, speeding up the frame rate during repetitive actions and slowing down for the important details. There is also a nice artistic montage of the fly at the end. Well done and looking forward to more.

Brad’s Brat – Jay Nicholas

Brad’s Brat is a pretty classic steelhead fly for the northwest, and there are many versions of this chromer fly out there. Jay Nicholas of Caddisflyshop.com twists up his own classic here is this video. Personally, I’ve been tying tons of flies using fox hair and I’m quite fond of the stuff. It’s like marabou when it gets wet, but it has some real strength and can take a beating. The CDL is a great addition to the pattern with its natural speckling.
