Tag Archives: Split thread dubbing

Mossback – Hans Weilenmann

In addition to his vast online fly pattern database, Hans has also started putting together a library of fly tying video. This is his variation of the classic gold Ribbed Hare’s ear with less bling than what we are used to seeing in the fly shop bins. The pattern uses a weighted thorax and is dubbed using a technique called a Split Thread dubbing loop. It can be tricky at first, but with a good flat thread (Uni doesn’t work well here) it created an inline loop to spin your dubbing. It’s used several times in the video using a 12/0 Bennecchi thread. A UTC, or Marc Petitjean thread will aslo work quite well for the technique.
