A client recently requested a batch of squid flies for hunting Coho off the west coast. I didn’t have a ton of experience with calamari flies, so I hit the internets to find a few patterns that might work well for him. I found this beefy treat on Global Fly Fisher and tied up a couple dozen for the client. A couple weeks later I got a pile of silver slab photos and an angler with a huge grin. They worked like a charm. If you plan to head west to fish for anadromous species, bring a few squid to chuck. I wonder how pike or bull trout would react to something like that?
