I’ve been gearing up to go chase Musky, Gar and pike, so I’ve been on the prowl for some BAF for snot rockets and tigers. I found a wealth of knowledge and patterns over at Simon Graham’s site Pike Fly Fishing Articles. This pattern really caught my eye, and I have some plans to add a Fish Skull to this little fly. I’d love to post it, but I think this one will best be saved for my next article in Fly Fusion Magazine. I think this would be a killer fly in black as well for the pike I’ve been targeting.
I have used UV resins for a ton of patterns and have found that they are all good in their own way, some being better than others in terms of usability, dry time, aging and durability. I’ve been watching the videos being put out by the people at Clear Goo, and have been impressed with the flies they have been presenting. This newest fly is designed for bass, and looks pretty sick. I think the pike would love a goo at this little devil as well. the skirt is held in place with the resin, the head formed with resin and they also have a cool little trick for horns that you need to see. I’ll be watching for more from these guys, and will give the goo a try.
” if local fisherman in Papua New Guinea could catch tuna with condoms then how hard could it be to fool a pike into taking one..”
You’ll need to take a look at the step by step tutorial on how to tie this one. Before you run out to grab a box of this material, you may want to wait to hear back on the effectiveness as the fly has yet to be tested.
This does bring to mind a tying seminar I took a few years ago hosted by Jack Dennis. We were discussing the ins and outs (intended) of Czech nymphing and how one angler had developed a killer fly using pink condoms wrapped over tungsten. I’ll be watching to see how the Durex preforms on the Nordic Pike, and if it works well, the eruption of new patterns to follow. 😉
