Tape Wing Caddis – Oliver Edwards

I love fishing caddis flies and I’m big on the history of patterns as well. Oliver Edwards presents a wonderful account of the progression of this pattern and presents a killer caddis dry fly. The fly also employs the split thread dubbed body using the Marc Petitjean Magic Tool. Be sure to use a thread that you can split easily like UTC. Uni can be split, but is a bit more difficult. The end result is a bit of a fluffy looking caddis, but I can see how the silhouette will be quite effective on the trout streams.

Hook: size 12, 14 or 16 wide gape hook
Thread: Flat 8/0 thread you can split
Body: CDC spun in a loop with sparse dubbing
Wing: cdc dubbing and tape
Thorax: CDC spun in a loop

How it’s Done – Oliver Edwards

It’s been a bit since the last post, but we recently added a new member to our family that has been keeping me quite busy. I’m sneaking in an entry while the little lad sleeps one off. A friend recently send me some stellar Edwards patterns to view and I wanted to share his take on a basic and effective nymph pattern. Edwards has a great little tip at the end for adding subtle weight to the fly which is an interesting touch. I like to add add6-8 legs on my own PTN’s but I do like the look of Mr. Edwards finished fly. These flies are great for trout, grayling and other insectivore species.

Edwards – Tying The Rhyacophila Larva

Wow, another Oliver Edwards gem has just surfaced. I’m just back from vacation in Maui and trying to adjust to the time change again. It’s only 6 hours, but it’s causing me to sleep into noon and to stay up all hours of the night tying flies.

This 2 part pattern features Mr. Edwards tying up another “simple” pattern. The Rhyacophila Larva, aka Green Rock Worm may be used effectively on most any stream. Mr. Edwards video features a semi-realistic version that actually looks not too difficult to tie.
