Years ago, my cat Mags, got under my feet and I ended up stepping on the hair of his tail. A big chunk of hair was left behind, pretty much even tipped, and so I figured I would put it to good use. I decided to tie the cat hair into a Clouser pattern and this was the result. Fox is a good substitute for the cat hair, besides, it might be too noticeable to have the cat walking around with a bald tail.
I put the fly in my fly box and a couple months later found myself fishing in a northern Alberta lake. I decided to try the fly and trolled it behind our boat. I was soon tangled up with one of my largest pike on the fly.

I love using Clouser minnows and fondly remember being able to watch Bob Clouser tie a few at a fishing show years ago. He mentioned several times not to overdress the fly and that most commercially tied flies broke this rule. The sparseness of the fly allows light to pass through the hairs and helps to sell it the predator as a baitfish. Shawn’s version of the Clouser tied with lots of light reflecting pearl flash. this will make a nice fly for trout in a number of colors. You can find the flash at Fly Tyer’s Dungeon.

The Fly Fiend is back with a great streamer fly. While he is best known for some of the killer nymph patterns he whips up at the vise, he is equally adept at tying larger baitfish streamer patterns. This minnow was designed to go after bass, but any toothy critter is bound to give chase. I haven’t given the Fish Mask product a try yet, but I do like the way it finishes this fly pattern. It gives the fly a nice clean head without needing the UV resin, curing light and positions the eyes evenly, something that can be a little bit challenging.
