Tying a Bead Head Flashback Hare’s Ear Nymph

This Bead Head Flashback Hare’s Ear Nymph is a simple variation on the classic Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear Nymph. The addition of the flashback and the riddance of the shellback make this easy to tie nymph a perfect confidence fl. It is going to be one of the staple flies in my small stream trout box this spring.

For the dubbing, you can either use a premixed hare’s ear dubbing or clip your own from a mask. I’ve clipped mine from a mask and blended the fibers between two pet grooming tools to evenly distribute the underfur and guard hairs.

I’m using the Hedron Mirage Flashabou, but you can use any pearl flash you might have on hand. The Mirage is opal and pearl, giving an almost mirror finish on the back of this nymph.

Northshore Stonefly Nymph

I started tying the Northshore Stonefly Nymph for a client but have been fishing this simplified stonefly nymph pattern designed for trout and steelhead. I tie the fly on a 3xl curved hook like the Mustad C53s, Tiemco 200R or the Partridge K12ST. You could also bens a 4 or 5xl streamer hook if you are in a bind. I use a custom blend of dubbing this fly that is similar to Hareline’s Senyo’s Laser Dub. The process to make your own dubbing is pretty straightforward so if you want to try it out yourself, you can check out the process here. I tie this in black, brown (this version in the video), olive, and golden.

Elk River Nymph by Boots Allen

Driggs/Jackson area fly fishing guide Boots Allen ties up his Elk Liver Nymph fly pattern. I really love the finished look of this little nymph, but if you don’t have access to creating dubbing brushes, you can use a simple dubbing loop to get the job done. The result is a very mottled looking nymph with a decent amount of flash.
