Emerald Shanker by Kevin Hospodar

Kevin’s Emerald Shanker is a perfect little fly to swing through a pool of great lakes steelhead. The black and chartreuse color combination is a personal favorite for fishing tributaries of Lake Ontario. It’s a simple pattern and easy to modify to suit your needs.

Kevin ties this pattern in a few different variations including versions with weighted barbell eyes and an added grizzly hackle in the wing. I can’t wait to swing this one.

Suskwa Poacher tied by Darren MacEachern

The Suskwa Poacher is tied on an articulated shank aka stinger hook or intruder hook. You can find the tutorial for tying the shank at https://youtu.be/928yL1gK1RU and it can be used to tie this fly and many others.

The Suskwa Poacher is a popular and proven Egg Sucking Leech pattern. This dark colored articulated fly is a killer choice for winter steelhead runs and for colored water in warmer seasons. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the spawning steelhead attach leeches on sight because they see them as predators of their vulnerable eggs. The leeches are hit aggressively, bitten, spit out and left for dead.

The fly can be fished on the swing or dead drifted along the bottom. Be sure to use a string wire for the leash and be sure to fold back the tag ends and you’ll have a nice sturdy fly.

Purple Prospector tied by Matt Powell

The Purple Prospector is a simple fly that Matt ties for the summer steelhead run on the west coast. This attractor steelhead pattern is weighted with a tungsten bead, and will not need much help to get down deep into the strike zone once it’s been saturated. The classic steelhead and salmon combination of pink and purple are a proven color mix for steelhead angler. The fly as tied by Matt is fairly heavily dubbed, and is sure to get bushy once it’s met a few steelhead teeth. It might be a good idea to give it a head start with a light brushing before it hits the water. It is a simple pattern that I will adapt slightly for a shot at some pike.
