Needle Fly Tying

I’ve just now run across a unique new (to me anyhow) method of tying flies. The concept is similar to that of tube flies, but rather than tying on a hollow tube, these flies are tied on needles. Like tubes, the leader isn’t tied directly to the front of the fly, but rather just the hook, allowing the fly to separate after a hook up. The needle has no eye suitable for passing a leader through, so a gut or nylon eye is tied on similar to tying an eye onto a blind salmon hook. John Gray has put together a great tutorial and explanation of the needle fly. You can check it out at http://www.trout-salmon-fishing.com/needle-fly-2.htm. You can also see a selection of his flies displayed on Hans’ site – John Gray flies on the Fly Tier page
